Handicraft artists from around the state are invited to participate in the 19th Annual South Carolina Palmetto Handcraft Contest and Exhibition.

Like the oldest craft competition and exhibition in the state, objects selected for the exhibition can compete for cash prizes of up to $ 6,500.

The exhibit is presented as a component of the annual North Charleston Arts Fest, to be held from April 28 to May 2, 2021. A $ 15 entry fee applies. Artists can submit up to four entries. The application is strictly available online and can be accessed through the link NorthCharlestonArtsFest.com/apply.

The application deadline is Monday, March 15, 2021. Artists who need help with the application process can contact the Department of Cultural Arts to schedule an individual meeting, which can be held over the phone or in person.

Organized and presented by the Department of Cultural Arts in the city of North Charleston, this unique exhibition offers craft artists from all over South Carolina the opportunity to display their inspiring objects in the media of clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood and three-dimensional mixing media.

Thousands of people enjoyed the refined talents of South Carolina handicrafts artists during the last annual exhibitions. After the show closes, up to 20 works will be selected to tour the state through the Itinerant Exhibition Program 2021/2022 of the South Carolina State Museum. Sites throughout South Carolina may request to display the exhibition on their premises, thereby providing additional exposure for selected artists.

Due to the cancellation of the 2020 competition and exhibition as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Karen Watson was asked to return to serve as a judge in 2021. Watson has been the Executive Director of the Sumter County Art Gallery in Sumter, SC, since 2005 .

She is committed to presenting challenging exhibitions of contemporary and traditional art by culturally diverse artists. Watson was a juror at the 2009 Juried Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Exhibition at the Burroughs-Chapin Art Museum (Myrtle Beach, SC), was a judge at the inaugural CCA 701 Prize in 2012 at the 701 Center For Contemporary Art, (Columbia, SC), and was a juror in several local art contests over the years.

The 19th Annual South Carolina Handicraft Competition and Exhibition Palmetto Hands Juried will be on display from April 28 to May 2, 2021, at the Charleston Area Convention Center, located at 5001 Coliseum Drive in North Charleston.

A free public reception and award announcement will be held at the Convention Center on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm
