“Women need to talk about how they made money and not be ashamed of it.”
OK, a quick recap: when presenting Best Makeup at the 2002 Oscars with Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe told his now ex-wife to reveal the winner because “You win more than me”. (Go to 1: 42-1: 52 in the video below.)

Did you forget that? Well, Witherspoon too, as she recently admitted on the podcast Conversational HFPA: “You are reminding me of that! I forgot what happened. But you are right, he said that, and no, it was not written.”

She went on to say that she had no idea that Phillippe would say that on stage, and that it left her “a little confused at the moment too”.
Witherspoon referred to the moment again later on the podcast, before delving deeper into “a double standard that exists in our society”.

“There are so few women who earn a lot of money that they are sometimes ashamed of it, and sometimes they are expected to give more and do more and be more to other people in the same position who say that a male movie star would not be expected to . “
“And that is just a double standard that exists in our society. But I think that gender norms have changed a little since that time in 2000.”

“I think there are more women making money. I think there is more talk about the division of housework and that men are capable, happy and willing to do things that their parents might not have done when they were growing up.”
“But I think it all comes back to the point where we need to talk. Women need to talk about money and how they made money and not feel ashamed about it.”

Witherspoon also shared a story about his daughter Ava feeling “so ashamed” after her classmates commented that her mother was one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses.
“I said, ‘Never be ashamed of a woman making money.’ There are women all over the world who have no opportunity, no education, no ability to make money. “

“And the more women who earn more money, they will give more money, they will take care of their societies, they will take care of their communities, they will do more with that money.”
“So, never feel bad that your mom makes money, and never feel bad if you make money, and don’t feel embarrassed or embarrassed if you are more than your partner.”

“And this is a lesson that I had to learn because my mother was certainly not in that situation and neither was my grandmother. I am still sailing this as a woman.”
Well placed.
