Reese Witherspoon, Chris Klein and Matthew Broderick are among those who remember Election actress Jessica Campbell, who died at age 38.
Campbell, who played Tammy Metzler in the 1999 film about three high school students running for student body presidency, died “suddenly and unexpectedly” at home on December 29, according to his professional website. After Hollywood success – also appearing on TV shows Freaks and Geeks and the 2001 film Object Security – she became a naturopathic doctor and worked in Vancouver, Wash.
A GoFundMe in his name was established for his 10-year-old son, Oliver, as well as to cover unexpected cremation, memorial and inventory expenses. Campbell was described as “a real adventurer in every sense of the word”, adding “an impressive amount of experiences in her tragically short life … Traveling around the world, acting, becoming a doctor, being the mother of the coolest boy of all ; these wish list items wove the everyday fabric of your reality. His passion for life and the people who live in it was impressive. “
Her cousin Sarah Wessling, who organized the online fundraiser, told TMZ that the family is awaiting the results of the Multnomah County Medical Examiner autopsy. Campbell had a normal day seeing patients. When visiting her mother and aunt later, she collapsed on the bathroom floor. Campbell was said to have congestion, thinking she was catching a cold, but the family did not suspect COVID.
Election director Alexander Payne and Freaks and Geeks executive producer Judd Apatow was among the top donors listed on GoFundMe – and Campbell did not lack tributes.
Witherspoon, whose character Tracy Flick fought Tammy Metzler in Election election, wrote that he is “heartbroken” when he hears the news. “Working with Jessica on Election it was a great pleasure. I am sending all my love to Jessica’s family and loved ones. “

Broderick, who played civic professor Jim McAllister, said The Hollywood Reporter, “When I think of Jessica, I remember a shy, incredibly sweet, rosy-cheeked teenager who liked to discuss with me what better to ask at Applebee’s. She was very sweet and an extremely good actress. Moving news. My deepest condolences to your son and the rest of your family. “
Apatow shared on Twitter that some of his “favorite memories of making Freaks and Geeks Jessica Campbell and @sethrogen discover their relationship in improvisations, ”as she played the playing tuba Amy Andrews, a love of Ken Miller of Rogen for two episodes in 2000.“ Jessica was so funny and an amazing and caring actress. What a terrible loss. ”(Rogen reshared Apatow’s post.)
