Reds wanted Gleyber Torres of the Yankees in rumors according to Luis Castillo

It is no wonder that Luis Castillo’s supposed trade with the Yankees is not happening.

In exchange for Castillo, the Reds asked Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres and more, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported on Monday.

The internet was abuzz over the weekend with erroneous reports of an exchange involving Castillo, the Reds’ star pitcher, going to the Yankees for Clint Frazier and Miguel Andujar. But the Reds’ general manager, Nick Krall, vehemently denied the reports, even addressing them publicly.

“[The rumors] are completely false, ”wrote Krall in a text for MLB.com. “We intend to have [Castillo] as a member of our rotation for 2021 ”.

Landing Castillo, the 28-year-old right-hand who was an All-Star in 2019 and posted an ERA of 3.62 for the past four years, would have been a big shot in the arm for the Yankees’ rotation. But not at the expense of Torres, the 24-year-old who was an All-Star in 2018-2019.

Torres had a difficult year in 2020, with his batting average (0.243) and OPS (0.724) falling during the reduced season. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told YES Network in December that Torres did not report to his second spring training “in top form”, believing it took 40-45 games to find his way.

While Cashman also acknowledged that Torres may be better suited to play second base, Torres must remain on the shortstop after the Yankees agreed to renew DJ LeMahieu on a $ 90 million contract for six years last week.
