Reds-Cardinals benches free after playing on the plate

The Reds and Cardinals did not punch, but they were in danger of being hit hard by the MLB after their banks cleared during the fourth entry of their game on Saturday in Cincinnati.

The incident occurred after Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos scored in a wild field, avoiding a mark by Cardinals pitcher Jake Woodford. After being considered safe, Castellanos was jaw-dropping at Woodford because he had been hit by a throw in the right shoulder at the beginning of the frame.

This led to the clearing of banks and bullpens and a good number of players in Central NL rivals facing off and pushing each other with the Reds leading by 7-2. The situation appears to be a direct violation of MLB’s COVID-19 protocols for this season with regard to fights.

“Fighting and instigating fights are strictly prohibited.” the protocols read. “Players must not make physical contact with others for any reason, unless it occurs in a normal and permitted action in the game. Violations of these rules will result in severe discipline. “

Castellanos was the only player sent off. It is unclear whether the MLB will take further action, but it will certainly test how the league plans to apply its COVID-19 protocols this season. The league suspended Astros coach for 20 games, Alex Cintron, for instigating a fight with A’s last season, and Oakland outfielder Ramon Laureano, six games for attacking the reserve bench.
