Redmi K40 could be renamed for Poco global launch

Xiaomi Redmi K40 Pro series

  • According to the model number and IMDA list, it looks like Poco could change the brand of the Redmi K40 for its own launch.
  • This would be again that Poco renamed a Redmi device instead of launching its own.
  • Poco announced that it became an “independent brand” in 2020, although it has launched a few exclusive phones since then.

In January 2020, the Xiaomi Poco subsidiary announced that it would become an independent brand. This was a welcome announcement, considering that the brand practically failed after the launch of its popular Poco F1 phone.

However, since that announcement, the so-called independent company has acquired the habit of launching rebrands of Redmi devices. Redmi is another subsidiary of Xiaomi. It is not clear how this means independence.

Regardless, the evidence strongly suggests (via XDA Developers) that at least one phone from the recently announced Redmi K40 series could be a Poco device globally soon. This would follow the Poco F2 Pro, Poco X2 and Poco M2 Pro, which were all reformatted Redmi phones.

The evidence that suggests a Koco phone from the Poco brand comes from the Singapore device certification organization IMDA. It shows a Poco phone with specifications identical to the Redmi K40. In addition, it has a model number (M2012K11AG) identical to that of the Redmi phone, except for the final letter, which goes from “C” to “G”. We predict that “C” means “China” and “G” means “Global”.

While there is nothing wrong with the redesign of the Poco brand on phones for global markets, it seems silly to make a big fuss about independence when this is not the case in practice. Anyway, if you are interested in purchasing the newest Poco phone soon, the Redmi K40 is probably the one you are going to buy.
