FX disconnected the plug Redeemer, the ongoing drama series that would have brought together Real detective author Nic Pizzolatto with season 1 headliner Matthew McConaughey confirmed TVLine.
According to THR, McConaughey gave up on the project (which was announced last January), prompting FX to drop it altogether.
The Redeemer, based on 2019 Patrick Colman novel The Churchgoer, centered on a “minister who became a dissolute security guard whose search for a missing woman in Texas takes him through a criminal plot full of corruption, as his past and present impact and intertwine in an escalating mystery of violence. it’s a mistake.” The potential series marked Pizzolatto’s first project under his new general contract with Fox 21 TV Studios and FX Productions. By THR, Pizzolatto is now negotiating an early exit from the business.
McConaughey and Pizzolatto have already joined in the critically acclaimed first season of HBO Real detective, in which McConaughey played Detective Rust Cohle. His performance earned him an Emmy for Best Leading Actor in a Drama Series. The anthology of crime has aired two more seasons, the most recent starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and completed in February 2019. HBO has yet to make a decision on a possible fourth season.
