The spectacular recovery of GameStop Corp. it broke up further on Tuesday, pulling other recent favorites from Reddit speculators with it after pessimistic investors appeared to cover their positions and turnover to shrink.

The video game retailer’s stock fell 28% to $ 162 at 4:03 am in the New York pre-market trading. This reduced its advance in the year to 760%. AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. fell 14% from the last close in the United States.

GameStop fell for the second time in three sessions on Monday, with turnover slowing to about a third of the value of the last five sessions, after last week’s sharp gains. The decline came when interest rates plunged to 53% of available shares, from more than 140% last month, according to data from financial analysis firm S3 Partners.

“Even if the open short position remains solid, the fading momentum may prevent another major upward movement,” said Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote, in written comments. “On the other hand, trading short on GameStop’s stock would require very solid nerves, which would prevent the stock from falling more than necessary.”

Restrictions on the number of shares that investors can buy using the popular trading app Robinhood Markets Inc. probably kept retail traders in check. The platform eased restrictions on Monday afternoon to allow users to buy a limit of 20 GameStop shares. This is higher than a share limit before the market opens.

Short Seller’s Clearance

The smaller number of shares sold short can also affect the day traders’ thesis that a higher share price would only result in more gains, since hedge funds that bet against Texas-based Grapevine would need cover your sales.

The reaction against short sellers, including Citron Research, was an important meeting place for retail traders who use Reddit to communicate about their bets. The craze has spread to companies like AMC Entertainment, which saw record volatility as turnover soared last week.

“The recent rise in all of these names had all the symptoms and similarities with a great inefficiency created by excess short sales compared to companies’ free float and excess liquidity,” said Alberto Tocchio, portfolio manager at Kairos Partners. “The rise of the Reddit factor is something that will be with us in the future, it is an additional factor that all hedge fund managers must face.”
