Red Sox complains Joel Payamps, puts Franchy Cordero on COVID’s injured list

The Red Sox claimed right handed Joel Payamps Blue Jays exemptions, according to Boston’s Twitter feed. To create on-call space, outfielder Franchy Cordero was put on the COVID-19 injured list, like Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reported earlier today.

Payamps returns to the Sox less than two weeks after Toronto acquired him in another resignation claim, after the Red Sox assigned Payamps to assign the newly signed to scale Garrett Richards. The Sox themselves first got Payamps in a resignation complaint in November, when the right-handed was DFA’ed by the Diamondbacks.

A veteran of eight minor league seasons in the Rockies and Diamondbacks organizations, Payamps has received brief analysis of the MLB level in each of the past two seasons, appearing in two games for Arizona in 2019 and 2020 (with an ERA of 3.86 over the seven career entries on the Show). More than 665 2/3 entries in the minors, Payamps has an ERA of 4.15 with a modest elimination rate of 20.34, starting 119 out of 145 games, but seeing increasing work as a reliever in both minor affiliates and in the League Dominican winter.

Cordero was acquired from Royals as part of the exchange of three teams with the Mets who saw Andrew Benintendi head from Boston to Kansas City. Cordero showed some glimpses of potential, but has suffered injuries, appearing in just 95 games in the Major League in his four seasons as a Major League player. It is not known whether Cordero’s placement on the COVID list is due to his own positive test for the virus, or whether he was placed on the list as a precautionary measure due to possible exposure.
