Record low China and Russia views: Gallup

Americans’ opinions about China and Russia have soured to record levels, according to new research.

Only 20% of Americans surveyed give China a favorable assessment, according to the Gallup poll released on Monday, representing a 13 percentage point drop in favorability of 33% a year ago. Last year’s result was the lowest since the late 1990s and tied at a record low after the Chinese government’s crackdown on demonstrators at Tiananmen Square.

Following party lines, Republicans ‘favorability to China fell 13 percentage points, to 10%, while Democrats’ decreased 8 points, to 27%.

When it comes to Russia, 77 percent of all respondents indicated that they now have an unfavorable opinion of the country. On the other hand, 25% of Republicans surveyed said they had a somewhat favorable view of Russia, with 18% of Democrats agreeing.

Since last year, Russia’s image has fallen among independents, Gallup noted, dropping 12 points to 24 percent. The views of Republicans and Democrats remained relatively unchanged during the same period.

The Gallup survey was conducted from 3 to 18 February with a random sample of 1,021 adults. It has a sampling error of 4 percentage points.
