Rebirth of ‘Rugrats’ with original voice cast for Paramount Plus debut

Get ready for the return of Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, Angelica Pickles, Susie Carmichael and Phil and Lil DeVille.

A new CG animated series “Rugrats” is scheduled to debut on the streaming service Paramount Plus (born CBS All Access) in 2021, Nickelodeon announced on ViacomCBS investor day.

Prepared to repeat their roles are stars EG Daily (Tommy), Nancy Cartwright (Chuckie), Cheryl Chase (Angelica), Cree Summer (Susie) and Kath Soucie (Phil and Lil). Nickelodeon Animation Studio is producing the revival, which promises to accompany children as “they explore the world and beyond their reduced and incredibly imaginative point of view”.

The original “Rugrats” series, which premiered in 1991 on Nickelodeon, spanned nine seasons over 13 years, winning four Daytime Emmys and six Kids’ Choice Awards.

“Rugrats is one of the most iconic cartoons recognized by fans around the world, and this original version is one that we’re taking great care and pride in creating for a whole new audience,” said Ramsey Naito, president of Nickelodeon Animation. “Having the voice of the cast behind these special characters is one of the essential pieces to make the series recognizable and we can’t wait to see this talented group bring them back to life.”

The CG animated revival is based on the original series created by Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo and Paul Germain. Eryk Casemiro and Kate Boutilier are executive producers with Dave Pressler and Casey Leonard on board as executive co-producers and Rachel Lipman as co-producer. Mollie Freilich, senior manager of Nickelodeon’s current animation series, is overseeing production.

Separately, ViacomCBS is restarting “Dora the Explorer” and “Fairly OddParents” as live action series.
