RDJ has serious words for Tom Holland’s career and spiderman

As Tom Holland’s MCU and real-life mentor, Robert Downey Jr. speaks openly about the reality of the actor’s career as Spider-Man in the future.

Robert Downey Jr. recently spoke about the harsh reality of Tom Holland’s future as Spider man. As a maiden MCU hero, the veteran actor knows a thing or two about retiring from a beloved franchise. And while it may still be a while before his contemporary follows suit, he is reminding him that, in the end, he would have to stop playing the web-launching hero.

The Iron Man actor was instrumental in Holland’s casting as Spider-Man in Captain America Civil War. Downey did screen tests with a number of candidates for the role, and his chemistry with Holland was so electrifying that Marvel Studios became convinced he was the right person for the job. Of course, it was not easy for the young actor, remembering how Downey often changed his speech and improvised, which kept him alert. Fortunately, he behaved well, which only increased his appeal. Eventually, he was officially hired and, almost five years later, since his first big screen appearance as the iconic Marvel hero, he is in the middle of filming his third independent film, Spider-Man: no way home.

Speaking with GQ UK as part of his extensive feature film about Holland, in light of the release of his latest film with the Russo Brothers, Cherry, Downey recalled the audition process and talked about the actor in general. At one point, he discussed how he would eventually have to retire from Spider-Man and accept that someone else would take the role.

Look, Tom is not going to play Spider-Man when he’s 37. At least I hope not. And when you are at the MCU, there is a feeling that all life begins and ends with it. But there is also life out there. I can confirm this. I’ve been there, done that, picked up the shirt. It’s funny, I found Keanu [Reeves] the other day, somewhere in Malibu, I think, and he told me that he had just finished filming the Matrix again; he went back to that world he once occupied. I asked him what it was like: ‘How to be in Australia’. What I am saying is that there was a Spider-Man before Tom Holland and there will be a Spider-Man after Tom Holland. These are facts, Tommo. Excuse me.”

Spider-Man Tobey Maguire Tom Holland Andrew Garfield

Before the arrival of the Netherlands, Sony Pictures Entertainment already had two different incarnations of the crawling superhero Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Both actors did well with their respective portraits and have huge fans, but they existed separately in their bubble, separate from the MCU. Since the historic agreement between Marvel Studios and Sony, the MCU has wasted no time ensuring that the Dutch version is fully utilized; in the past five years, he has appeared in five films Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Interestingly, Downey is talking openly about this because Iron Man may be one of the few superhero characters that can never be reworked, considering how synonymous he has become to Tony Stark.

Holland time as Spider manhowever, it may already be running out. Recently, the actor revealed that No way home concludes its contract with Marvel. Although he is more than happy to return as Peter Parker, the actor says that if it is not renewed, he will be delighted with the experience he had. Frankly, there is a good chance that it will be extended, especially if your next MCU solo film becomes a smash hit.
