Razer’s Huntsman V2 Analog pressure sensitive keys are literally revolutionary

In short: Razer has just launched its newest mechanical keyboard, which uses analog optical switches. The unique mechanics bring new possibilities for KB / M games. Variable movement speed, adjustable responsiveness and dual function keys change the way you play your favorite games.

On Wednesday, Razer announced the Huntsman V2 Analog gaming keyboard. From the point of view of physical design, the newest mechanical keyboard from Razer is identical to the excellent Huntsman Elite. The difference between the two comes down to the switches. The Huntsman V2 Analog replaces the Elite’s linear optical switches with pressure-sensitive analog mechanisms. These new actuators bring some important features to the table.

The first is the adjustable responsiveness. The keys on the newer Huntsman have a maximum travel distance of 3.6 mm by default. However, using Razer’s Synapse software, users can adjust the pressed keys to up to 1.5 mm. Razer says: “At shorter operating times, switches become lighter and more responsive, making them ideal for game genres where reaction and speed are critical.” It is important to note, however, that this does not change the feel of the mechanics.

A second advantage of analog switches is analog control. Adjusting the speed of movement with a key is as easy as varying the pressure applied, as with an analog joystick. With a light press of the key, players can make their character walk and, as the pressure increases, the game can respond with faster speeds up to a sprint. This new mechanic is more granular than the traditional walking / running alternation and may take some getting used to, but it can be a game changer. Razer says the Huntsman V2 works with any title compatible with an analog gamepad.

Finally, the Huntsman V2 Analog offers what Razer calls “Dual-Step Actuation”. This feature allows users to program two functions for a key. The first will be performed with light pressure and the second with full pressure. For example, if you have two skills in an RPG that you always use in quick succession, you can program a key to activate them. The Razer announcement video (above) shows another example where light pressure equips a grenade and full pressure throws it.

Some other features differentiate this Huntsman Elite keyboard, including Razer’s “Doubleshot” PBT keycaps, customizable RGB backlight and USB 3.0 port. For now, the Huntsman V2 Analog is only available on Razer for $ 250. Amazon and Best Buy are scheduled to launch from February 9th.
