Random: this switch-style mini-PC takes a leaf from Nintendo’s book

Lenovo and NEC have just unveiled a mini-PC concept that shows how effective Nintendo’s approach to the Switch was.

Part of the LaVie line – which is a joint venture between the two companies – the LaVie Mini is a tiny portable computer with a touch screen of 1920 x 1200 pixels of 8 inches and an 11th generation Intel processor with Xe graphics.

Judging by the images shown, this system – if it hits the market – will not provide the most comfortable typing experience, but the goal here is to claim the Holy Grail of consumer convergence: a portable computer that also functions as a portable gaming system .

Lenovo and NEC not only present this system with removable controllers that are screwed to the sides of the main unit, but also display a docking station that can send a 4K signal to your TV or monitor. However, like many of these concepts, there is an obstacle; even without the controllers attached to the LaVie Mini, it weighs 1.28 pounds. The Switch, with its Joy-Con connected, weighs 0.88 pounds.

Given that many other attempts at this type of thing have failed or have not passed the concept stage, it remains to be seen whether the LaVie Mini will become a solid reality. Whatever happens, it is even more justification for Nintendo’s unique approach to its latest game system. If you can not beat them, join them.
