Rams plans to remove Blake Bortles from the Broncos training team

The Los Angeles Rams will not have Jared Goff on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals after the quarterback broke his thumb and underwent surgery to repair the injury on Monday. John Wolford will start, but as an emergency option, Blake Bortles will also be available.

Sean McVay said during his media session on Monday that the team will remove Bortles from the Broncos’ training squad. He will not restart Wolford, but will be the quarterback for the third straight in case something happens to Wolford or Bryce Perkins before the game. Given the way this season went with the coronavirus pandemic, it is always better to have a backup plan, which is the case for the Rams here.

Wolford will see his first action in the NFL after just playing in the preseason and spending time in the AAF, so it is especially important for LA to have someone with experience at this level. Bortles was with Rams last season and tried two passes, completing one for 3 yards. He also ran twice for a 9-yard loss in three appearances for the Rams.

The Rams can guarantee a playoff spot with a victory over the Cardinals, or a loss from the Bears to the Packers on Sunday afternoon.
