Rams must sign Blake Bortles again with Jared Goff away due to thumb injury

All signs point to the Los Angeles Rams entering their critical week 17 rematch with the Arizona Cardinals – and perhaps the playoffs – without starting quarterback Jared Goff, who will be recovering from surgery for a broken and dislocated thumb. If everything goes according to plan, however, they will have at least a reinforcement in the position starting on Sunday. According to ESPN reports, coach Sean McVay revealed that the Rams intend to re-sign Blake Bortles’ reserve as an emergency option for titleholder John Wolford.

Bortles, who has been essentially at the Denver Broncos since the end of September, is free to join the active Rams squad, as he is only in the Denver training squad. The latter spent the entire year of 2019 as a reserve for Goff, appearing in three games as a relief.

While the Rams have already nominated Wolford as their Week 17 holder, the previous undeveloped Wake Forest product has not yet launched a single pass for the NFL. Bortles, on the other hand, is also familiar with the McVay system and has 73 games of initial experience thanks to his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In the event that Goff is forced to lose a long period of time, including possible playoff clashes, it is conceivable that McVay could turn to Bortles as a seat holder. The only other QB available to Rams entering Week 17 is the newcomer to the Bryce Perkins training team.
