Several 49ers players continue to believe 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Even if the 49ers don’t.
The 49ers tight end, George Kittle, spoke in favor of the battered Garoppolo on Tuesday. The 49ers running back Raheem Mostert too.
“Hey, look, this is my quarterback to the contrary, you know, and that’s who I’m going to compete with,” said Mostert on Tuesday on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “And that is how the players feel. . . . When it comes to the business side, many players have no advantages and disadvantages. They don’t know anything. And that is my case now. I don’t know whose future it is, you know, who will be at risk in San Francisco. I don’t know if we’re going to make this exchange for Deshaun [Watson], who knows, knows? The only people who know are the front office and the GM and the owner and the head coach, you know? But this league is changing and it’s crazy, man, to see, you know, all the mobile quarterbacks out there. But hey, like I said, I’m still hanging out with my quarterback and this is number 10. He’s going to do the job for us, and that’s what we believe in. “
The organization clearly seems to feel the opposite, given that the 49ers chased quarterback Matthew Stafford and because of the 49ers’ ability to leave Garoppolo with a minimum limit.
Where the 49ers go from here is yet to be seen. An exchange for Kirk Cousins? A change for Sam Darnold? Josh Rosen’s development? The 49ers seem to have, at least for, a “anyone but Garoppolo” vibe. Even if players like Kittle and Mostert don’t want anyone else.
