Quebec police arrest 2 people and fines 6 for violating Covid-19 blocking restrictions at a 7-person party

A man should be charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest, Gatineau police spokeswoman Mariane Leduc said on Sunday.

A woman was also arrested for refusing to identify herself, but was released as soon as she agreed, Leduc said. Police said it is possible that the woman faces charges.

Two police officers responded to a house in Gatineau on Thursday night, around 11:30 pm, after receiving a complaint about a party, Leduc said.

She said two women answered the door and refused to cooperate with the police. They did not present their identities when questioned by police, which could lead to the prosecution of a crime, said Leduc.

There were six adults and a child in the house at the time, but Quebec’s current Covid-19 restrictions prohibit such meetings. Leduc said that a person who lives alone can go to another family or, at most, receive a family on vacation.

A video made by someone else in the house was posted on Twitter on Friday and shows police officers in a confrontation with a man at the door. Screams can be heard in the background.

Another man who was inside the house can be seen trying to prevent the man from being taken outside.

Later in the video, police officers are seen physically arresting the man outside the home, while the support officers arrive and continue talking to some women inside the home.

Gatineau police tweeted Saturday the video shows only part of the incident in which a man was taken from his home and that “the individuals were recalcitrant and refused to cooperate”. Police said the person arrested in the video had assaulted a police officer, hitting him in the face a few times.

CNN news partner CBC reported on Saturday that the video was posted by Mathieu Tessier, the man who was arrested. Tessier told CBC that he believes the police used excessive force. He denies assaulting an officer.

Tessier acknowledged to CBC that he was in danger of holding a holiday meeting, but he believed that if the authorities were called, they would have received only a warning and a polite request to separate the party. “The police cannot do what they did to us. They treat us like animals, like criminals,” said Tessier.

Leduc said six adults were fined $ 1,000 each, plus $ 546 in fees, for violating a public health law.

She said the man who was arrested allegedly “accused” the policemen and tried to pull one of the policemen into the house.

No one was injured in the altercation and everyone was released at the scene after they calmed down, said Leduc.
