The ouchie foot that Patrick Mahomes played in the Super Bowl LV will require surgery. This will definitely fix the receiver’s hands.
Forward rumors about QBs in the market.
• Ah yes. The tug of war in the battle for Carson Wentz continues:
“I don’t think Howie Roseman felt he would get the first two and the third, which is what he originally asked for. They are not going to get that. They told me that it would be difficult to move him with that film for any kind of meaning in return. “- @Jeff_McLane

• I suppose the sounds you heard were Howie Roseman stepping back after thinking (wrongly) that he could get a Matthew Stafford-type return on a deal for Carson Wentz. To be honest, Wentz probably got several first in a trade this time of last year. But as the 2020 season happened, and the injury history is what it is, that ship left. At least, it has to get to this point.
• Just when we thought things were going to slow down, former NFL executive (and current analyst) Scott Pioli ponders to share that the negotiation process could pick up speed again:
Wait time for @cj_wentz trade to accelerate significantly. Not much is said about Wentz due to the $ 10.0 million bonus on the third day of the new league year and my guess is @Eagles will not pay. Said the same thing about Matthew Stafford and his 5-day bonus and @Lions moved fast! #NFL

• I have long believed that deadlines are good for those who do business. Whether in an overly competitive fantasy league or a multi-billion dollar sports organization, setting a deadline provides an incentive to make something work. Then read Pioli’s tweet and know that the third day of the new year of the league is March 20th. In other words, the Eagles have 39 days to settle something with Wentz and the team that ends up being next. Time is running out, my friends.
• If you are not following Bill on Twitter or checking out his podcast, you must correct this. Meanwhile, informed speculation provides some additional (and very necessary) perspectives:
Informed speculation of @MikeGarafolo for @AdamSchein in @MadDogRadio where the final comp will be for Wentz. “I think it’s a positive delay.”
It seems that Bears has not yet offered one.
He also speculated #Bears landing site most likely, but stressed. Bears still looking at other QBs

• Speaking of Bears looking at other defenders:
Wentz is not the only QB that the Bears have already sniffed with that connection. https://t.co/Ec59TGqZRg
– Benjamin Allbright (@AllbrightNFL) February 9, 2021
• As noted yesterday, Bears QBs game coordinator / coach John DeFilippo has previous experience with Wentz, Derek Carr, Kirk Cousins and Gardner Minshew. Or, to put it another way, the coach with a new chic title had his hands on several QBs that happen to be in this year’s commercial market. So, let’s not assume that the promotion is some kind of precursor to a move to a specific defender.
• But also … take note of the following:
Carr starts for Raiders Week 1. https://t.co/9EpkuyQRsm

• In the meantime, I see this as the Colts trying to get the Eagles to pull the trigger for a smaller offer in a deal with Carson Wentz:
Starting to hear more and more about Matt Ryan and @colts
– Dan Dakich (@dandakich) February 9, 2021
• After watching Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford switch places, Matt Ryan’s contract was upgraded from “immovable” to “umm … I think anything is possible ¯ _ (ツ) _ / ¯” in terms of exchange. But there is a feeling that Ryan will not be on the move, with Falcons owner Arthur Blank expressing confidence that Ryan (and Julio Jones) will return in 2021. Still, I see this clever maneuver and take my hat off to Indy. Well played.

• I had a laugh at the idea of NFL GM’s spewing despair in the general direction of Seattle in an attempt to get Russell Wilson out of the Seahawks. But maybe I shouldn’t be laughing:
I heard that Russell Wilson’s camp is becoming increasingly frustrated by the Seahawks’ inability to protect the Pro Bowler 8 times. He has been fired 394 times in 9 seasons. This situation requires serious monitoring.

“I’m not sure if I’m available or not. That’s a question from the Seahawks.” – Russell Wilson at @dpshow
– Andrew Perloff (@andrewperloff) February 9, 2021
“I want to be involved. At the end of the day, it’s your legacy, your team’s legacy … It helps to be more involved. This dialogue should happen more often.” – Russell Wilson says that players should contribute because they have an idea of who loves the game and is good (@dpshow)

• What if all of this Wentz talk is a smokescreen for Ryan Pace’s big swing being a business for Russell Wilson? (Hey! Don’t look at me like that. That’s why I will often remind you, my beloved readers, to dream the biggest dreams. I will never say not to dream big about a rumor, a player or anything, if so, I can do it when the right time comes.)
