Even with a year of the COVID-19 pandemic, its effects are still being felt. In recent months, in particular, a worldwide shortage of chips that power connected devices has left several silicon components in limited supply. Now, it appears that the chip shortage is affecting Qualcomm.
A new report today from Reuters says Qualcomm is struggling to keep up with demand for its processors across the board, including the company’s popular Snapdragon chipsets. Apparently, Samsung is specifically feeling the pinch of this shortage.
A person at a Samsung vendor said Qualcomm’s chip shortages were hitting production of mid-range and low-end Samsung models. The second person, from another vendor, said Qualcomm’s new flagship chip, the Snapdragon 888, was missing, but did not say whether it was affecting Samsung’s next-generation phone manufacturing.
Ironically, Huawei’s downturn appears to be making things worse, as demand for Qualcomm chips has been higher than normal, as Android manufacturers that depend on Qualcomm are looking to capitalize on customers who switch from Huawei devices that do not. have access to the Play Store and Google Services. It is this increased demand that left Qualcomm with a shortage of some of the components used in its chipset designs.
Qualcomm, at first, was unaffected by the lack of chips that hit automakers and companies like AMD and Nvidia for its next-generation CPUs and GPUs.
