Update: The PSN is low, extending for almost 24 hours. Online games are affected for certain games, while other parts of the network, such as PlayStation Now, still work.
PSN is experiencing a major disruption, according to Sony’s official PlayStation Network status page – and the fact that we can’t log in to our PS4 right now. Online games on the PS5 have also dropped, according to Twitter users, but we can’t test this first hand now – not everyone has the new console due to the PS5’s lack of refueling.
“You may have difficulty launching games, applications or network resources,” confirms Sony’s PSN status page. “We are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”
Today’s PSN crash began last night in U.S. time zones, according to the status page. There is a timestamp attached to the post, suggesting that things went down at 6:33 pm on February 26 (Friday night).
Many people who recently purchased the new PS5 may be affected, along with the owners of the PS4, PS3 and PlayStation Vita. It is not clear whether all online games are affected by this PSN disruption, judging by Sony’s language and our own experiences. Microsoft’s Xbox Live crashed this week and released more granular information on its status page.
PSN is down and the outage now lasts for two days, but this is not the first or the longest downtime for Sony’s online gaming network.
Notoriously, PSN crashed in 2011 for 24 days, plus an additional 42 days for the then-emerging PlayStation Store. In this much more dire case, it was later confirmed that the hackers exploited the PSN and exposed the users’ information, according to Sony. Today’s PSN outage appears to be just an unhappy weekend downtime.
