Samsung’s 2020 range of 4K smart TV models is not supposed to offer the best graphics experience for PS5 (PlayStation 5) console owners, although TV models like the Q70T, Q80T, Q85T, Q90T and Q95T are technically capable of any Sony PS5 can play against them. Now, while this can be frustrating for PS5 owners who may want to experience the highest possible graphics settings on the console, it can be a temporary problem and can be fixed through a firmware update.
Strangely, Xbox Series X owners don’t have to worry about any of this. Microsoft’s new console and all its graphics capabilities appear to be fully compatible with Samsung’s 2020 4K smart TV line, so it’s not entirely clear why PS5 owners can’t enjoy a similar experience. According to reports, Samsung’s 4K TV models can play 4K SDR content at 120 Hz or 4K HDR content at 60 Hz. They cannot offer 4K HDR content at a high refresh rate of 120 Hz. PS5 owners essentially have to choose a higher frame rate or HDR, but they cannot have both at the same time.
This unwanted behavior apparently occurs even with the latest firmware updates installed on the 2020 line of Samsung’s smart TV. The exact cause is not clear, but it probably has something to do with HDMI 2.1, given all the problems that have surrounded the standard so far. Samsung will likely resolve this deficiency through another firmware update, but time will tell. Until then, be aware that your Samsung smart TV does not appear to be able to provide the best graphics experience for your PS5.
