Kyle Rittenhouse may not have violated his bail conditions when he was spotted in a bar with his mother, but that is the problem, according to prosecutors seeking to change the conditions of his release.
After paying a $ 2 million bail in November, Rittenhouse, 18, was seen drinking at a bar in Wisconsin, where it is legal to drink in the company of his parents. This, the police said, was not a crime.
But Kenosha County prosecutors said on Wednesday that Rittenhouse – accused of killing two people at a Black Lives Matter protest in Kenosha last August – was not only there with his mother, but with members of the far right Proud Boys, an extremist group that engaged in street violence against anti-racist activists, reported Milwaukee television station TMJ4.
Images taken from security cameras at Pudgy’s Bar also appear to show Rittenhouse showing the “ok” sign with the hand favored by white supremacists.
This, too, is not a violation of Rittenhouse’s bail conditions. But it should be, prosecutors argue.
In a motion obtained by TMJ4, the Kenosha County District Attorney’s office asks that Rittenhouse be banned from drinking alcohol (he is said to have had three beers at Pudgy’s); banned from public display of “white power” signs; and prohibited from having any contact with members of white supremacy organizations.
Rittenhouse is due to appear in court on March 10, with the jury’s selection starting on March 29.
