Steve Sarkisian earned his first five-star chance as Texas head coach on Saturday, quarterback Maalik Murphy. As Murphy is a California native, Sarkisian’s west coast ties were one of the main reasons why the Longhorns were able to bring him.
In the 247Sports compound, the quarterback is classified as the No. 30 player in the country. Murphy was classified as a professional QB and is number 2 in his position, behind only Quinn Ewers. Since the recruiting notes were kept, he ranks as the fourth highest defender Texas has won.
As with all recruitment, there are pros and cons to taking players into your class. With Murphy, there are far more positives than negatives. He projects himself as one of the best defenders in the 2022 recruiting cycle, but his lack of experience will leave doubts.
