Priyanka Chopra released a new memoir entitled Unfinished, in which she gives readers a closer look at her rise to fame in the past two decades and what lies ahead in her life and career. In sharing the highlights of her life, she also details a time when she went under the knife with disastrous results.

The actress scheduled a routine polypectomy soon after, but the procedure went wrong when the surgeon accidentally scraped the bridge of his nose while trying to remove the tissue.

“My original nose was gone. My face looked completely different. I was no longer me,” she writes, according to Insider. “I felt devastated and hopeless. Every time I looked at myself in the mirror, a stranger looked at me and didn’t think that my sense of identity or my self-esteem would ever recover from the blow.” Not long after, Chopra became the subject of endless scrutiny after knowledge of his surgery became public. She ended up losing two film roles she got after being crowned Miss World in 2000 and was demoted from leading actress to supporting actress in another, and members of the press started calling her “Plastic Chopra”.

“My career, a career based on both physical appearance, seemed to be over before it really started,” she writes in the memoir, according to Insider. Years later, Chopra admits that he “got used” to his face, although he also underwent a few more surgeries in an attempt to restore his nose.

“Now, when I look at myself in the mirror, I am no longer surprised,” she writes. “I made it up to this slightly different self.”
