Prince Philip undergoes procedure for heart problems

“The Duke of Edinburgh yesterday underwent a successful procedure for pre-existing heart disease at St Bartholomew Hospital,” says the statement. “His Royal Highness will remain in the hospital for treatment, rest and recovery for a few days.”

On Monday, he was transferred to St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, also in London, to continue treating the infection and what the Palace said was a test and observation for pre-existing heart disease.
St. Bartholomew’s specializes in cardiac care, according to the hospital’s website, which considers it “the largest specialized cardiovascular service in Europe”.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, said on Wednesday that Philip’s condition was “slightly improving” after his transfer, despite his treatment hurting “at times”, according to PA Media.

“We keep our fingers crossed,” Camilla added of her father-in-law, according to PA.

Philip and the queen received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

They spent most of last year at Windsor Castle, having moved out of Buckingham Palace during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020.

The prince withdrew from public life in 2017 and has been taken to the hospital several times in recent years. In December 2019, he received hospital treatment for a pre-existing illness.
