University of santa clara said in a statement on Monday that an independent investigation is being conducted against the school’s president, Father Kevin O’Brien.
John Sobrato, chairman of the Board of Trustees at the University of Santa Clara, said the school was informed by the Provincial of the Western Province of the USA who received reports that O’Brien “exhibited behaviors in adult environments, consisting mainly of conversations, which can be inconsistent with established Jesuit protocols and limits. ”
O’Brien was placed on leave as dean of the university pending the outcome of the investigation by the Western Province of the USA. He agreed to cooperate with the investigation and “honor the process he claims annually as part of his ongoing Jesuit training,” said Sobrato.
O’Brien presided over a mass for Biden, Vice President Harris, his relatives and congressional leaders in Biden’s inauguration. Mass was celebrated at St. Matthew the Apostle’s Cathedral in Washington, DC, the school announced at the time.
The school’s statement also noted that O’Brien has been friends with Biden for nearly 15 years and had already performed ceremonies for Biden’s previous inaugurations.
Sobrato’s testimony does not specify the charges against O’Brien.
Tracey Primrose, spokesman for the West Jesuit Province, also gave no details on allegations of The Mercury News.
“Jesuits are subject to a professional code of conduct and the Province is investigating allegations that may violate or compromise the established limits,” Primrose told the newspaper.
“The West Jesuit Province has confidentiality practices, which is why I cannot provide any further information on this matter,” she continued.
The Hill contacted Primrose and the White House for comment.
