LONDON – Samsung launched three mid-range smartphones on Wednesday, hoping to attract people with less money to spend as its competition with Apple intensifies.

The new phones are part of Samsung’s Galaxy A budget line, which has become a popular brand among Samsung customers who have moved away from the high prices of the company’s flagship Galaxy S line.

Samsung plans to regain its position as the world’s largest smartphone maker after Apple won that title in the fourth quarter of 2020. Apple’s new iPhone 12 is the company’s first model to come with 5G capacity.

Samsung is launching three new models: the Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G and Galaxy A72. The new line is an update to last year’s Galaxy A51 and A71 devices. The A52 5G is the only device of the three that supports super fast 5G internet.

Specifications and features

The South Korean electronics giant says its new phones come with a number of improvements over their predecessors, including a better screen, camera and battery life.

The Galaxy A52 has a glossy 6.5-inch screen, while the Galaxy A72 has a 6.7-inch panel. The Galaxy A52 5G includes a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which basically means that you will be able to roll more smoothly. The basic Galaxy A52 and the more expensive A72 models have a refresh rate of 90Hz.

Samsung says it takes eye strain into account, including a feature that automatically adjusts the color temperature of the screen, depending on how the person uses the phone. There is also a music sharing setting that allows users to sync their phone with a friend’s device to connect to a Bluetooth speaker without having to connect directly to the speaker.

All three phones contain a quad-camera with a 64-megapixel main lens. The Galaxy A72 has a 3x optical zoom, which, according to Samsung, will allow users to take a photo from a distance of 10 meters that appears to have been taken only three meters away.

Another important camera feature in the new Galaxy A line is Fun Mode, developed in partnership with Snap. It is a tool of Samsung’s native camera application that allows you to add Snapchat filters to your photos and videos.

Samsung also released better battery life with its new devices, promising two days of use without having to worry about charging the phones. The A52 and A52 5G come with a 4,500mAH battery, while the A72 has a larger 5,000mAH battery.

Price and release date

Samsung’s Galaxy A52 will be sold at 349 euros ($ 415), while the A52 5G and A72 will cost 429 euros and 449 euros, respectively.

Samsung has not yet given an international launch date for the new phones, but said they will be launched in the United States in April.

“This new line represents a significant step in performance and resources,” Paolo Pescatore, technology, media and telecommunications analyst at PP Foresight, told CNBC.

“The most notable features are the impressive display, including the high refresh rate and much longer battery life.”

The new cheap phones from Samsung can tempt people who are not prepared to pay $ 1,000 or more for a premium model of Android or iPhone.

“The launch is timely and comes at an interesting time, given the large number of new smartphone launches,” said Pescatore.

“While there is great excitement with the arrival of new smartphones, competition at the intermediate level is intense. Samsung has done a good job of including sought-after premium features (some of its flagship S21 device) at exorbitant prices.”
