Just a day after his supporters revolted inside the US Capitol, the president Donald Trump went back to work. And by business, we mean golf.
POTUS awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 3 professional golfers on Thursday – retired stars Annika Sorenstam and Gary Player, as Babe Didrikson Zaharias, who died in 1956.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s greatest civilian tribute … which the White House describes as an award given to those “who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace or to culture. or other significant public or private undertakings. “
Player and Sorenstam were scheduled to receive the award in March … but the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ceremony is usually open to the press … but not this time.
Of course, this probably has to do with the events that took place in DC on Wednesday … with hundreds of pro-Trump supporters invading the Capitol.
If you are questioning the decision to continue the event – given that the country is still dealing with the consequences of Wednesday’s incident – you are not alone.
Son of the player, Marc, expressed his concern that his father would accept the award, tweeting: “I would like my father to simply and politely refuse this ‘award’ at this time.”
“Tom deaf. In denial. Wrong !!”
The most recent recipients join Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Charlie Sifford and Tiger Woods as the only golfers to receive the award.
