BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Many across the Brazos Valley are without power on Monday morning after the Texas Electric Reliability Council (ERCOT) instructed utility companies across the state to initiate outages to help rebalance the power grid.
ERCOT has declared a “three energy emergency alert” in the state and said that continuous interruptions are necessary. Continuous interruptions are temporary interruptions in the electrical service that can last from 10 to 45 minutes per neighborhood and are necessary due to an imbalance between the electrical charge and the available generation resulting from the cold climate.
Bryan Texas Utilities is reporting almost 23,000 outages on Monday morning. Rotating outages will continue in the morning, but BTU said some outages are related to the weather.
MidSouth Electric Co-Op, a utility company that operates in Grimes, Madison, Montgomery and Walker counties, reported 2,039 outages on Monday morning.
Navasota Valley Electric, which serves Robertson, Leon, Freestone, Limestone, Brazos, Falls, Madison, Hill and McLennan counties, reported more than 10,000 outages.
Bluebonnet Electric serves many counties in central Texas, including Washington, Lee, Burleson and Milam counties. In these four counties, 6,446 power outages have been reported.
ERCOT said it expected interruptions on Monday morning, but they could last until the bad weather ends. They are asking all consumers to conserve their energy use.
“Every network operator and every electric company is struggling to restore power now,” said ERCOT President and CEO Bill Magness.
