Post Malone covers by Hootie & the Blowfish for Pokémon Day

Post Malone, Hootie & the Blowfish, Pokémon – words that no one expects to see together.

And yet, there they are, in a confusing crossover linked to the 25th anniversary of the Japanese cartoon. In honor of the landmark, rapper “White Iverson” will headline a virtual show on Saturday.

As a teaser for the show, Malone shared his version of the single “Only Wanna Be With You” from the 1990s alternative rock group Hootie & the Blowfish.

The earworm debuted just over 25 years ago – and just two weeks after Austin Richard Post, aka Post Malone, was born.

“I’ve been a Pokémon fan for a long time, so the opportunity to headline the 25th anniversary ‘Pokémon Day’ show is incredible,” Post said in a press release earlier this month. He also previously transformed himself into a Pokémon-worthy character to promote the event.

On Thursday, Pokémon Company International celebrated the collaboration, tweeting, “Hootie & the Blowfish? More like Posty & the Qwilfish, ”and adding a link to the track.

The Pokémon Company also said it expects more online experiences, like this weekend’s birthday show, which will air on February 27 at 7 pm on YouTube and Twitch, thanks to a new partnership with Universal Music Group, which promises artists “ surprise ”this year. The merchandising giant will announce more headliners as part of its “P25 Music” campaign after Saturday’s presentation.

In addition to celebrating Pokémon, Malone, tattoo lover and Ozzy Osbourne collaborator, was also in the news last month for donating 10,000 pairs of his sold-out Duet Max Clog II Crocs to frontline staff at dozens of U.S. hospitals.
