Positive sign of spring for Aaron Judge of the Yankees

Observations of the Yankees’ spring training on Saturday.

Order restored

Aaron Judge made a good run reception on a Bryan Reynolds liner in the center-right gap at the top of the third entry of the Yankees’ 7-5 victory over the Pirates at Steinbrenner Field. Judge says he feels better physically than he did in 2020, after a refined off-season fitness program that he hoped would make him more “dynamic” on the pitch.

The wrong things

Right-handers Darren O’Day and Chad Green gave up on homers in their only work shifts, while southpaw Justin Wilson was better his second time on the mound after fighting in his Grapefruit League debut.

Caught my eye

While baseball struggled to figure out what to do with the move, Aaron Hicks defeated one of them with a hit on the third base line. Pitcher Richard Rodriguez let it go, but he nailed it and Hicks raised his arms to celebrate at first base.

Sunday Schedule
