In a lawsuit, Department of Justice (DOJ) lawyers said the new department and Treasury Department leaders “have assessed and discussed” their position.
“As the transition to new leadership in both agencies is still underway, the Defendants need more time to complete this process,” wrote DOJ lawyers.
The government asked parties to the lawsuit over House Democrats’ request to file another status report on April 2.
DOJ attorneys said they will not object to Judge Trevor McFadden, a judge at the federal district court in Washington, DC, appointed by Trump, who extends his order until April 2 that requires the Treasury to give Trump’s personal lawyers 72 hours of before submitting the ex-president’s tax returns to the Chamber’s Ways and Means Committee.
Trump’s lawyers said in Wednesday’s lawsuit that they agreed with the DOJ’s approach.
The Advocates of the Ways and Means Committee said that any additional time given to management to determine its position “should be limited, given how long the Committee’s request was blocked”.
McFadden scheduled a conference call on the case for April 1, in light of the panel’s concerns. He extended his order by requiring 72 hours notice before that date and asked the parties to the process to submit a status report by March 31.
