Portland police detain more than 100 people during protest

Portland police cracked down on protesters on Friday night, arresting more than 100 people in the hope of preventing a second night of window smashing and fire.

Protesters gathered in the Pearl district of central Portland at around 8:30 pm, but police quickly warned that anyone who blocked the streets would be arrested.

Around 9:20 pm, police said on Twitter they were creating a perimeter around the protesters and arresting them.

But they said the detention was temporary and that the protesters would be escorted out “one at a time”.

A crowd was outside the perimeter shouting “let them go,” according to OregonLive, who also reported that police threw pepper at two protesters.

The detained protesters were released after being photographed individually by the police; it was not clear whether any were charged with crimes.

The ongoing protests against the police turned violent on Thursday, when protesters smashed windows near a federal court and set fires on fire. Police responded with tear gas and smoke bombs to keep the crowds away, the agency said.

Meanwhile, rowdy suspect Darby Howard, 22, spent another night in prison after being arrested twice on Thursday, Fox News reported.

Howard reportedly caused more than $ 1,000 in vandalism damage at the Wells Fargo Center on Friday afternoon by breaking a flat-screen TV and a sliding glass door; the police say he punched a policeman in the head while trying to arrest him.
