Portland firefighter suspect arrested for attempted police murder

A man suspected of several incendiary bomb attacks on Portland police last year – allegedly throwing Molotov cocktails during violent demonstrations – was arrested last week in Indiana, officials said on Monday.

Malik Muhammed, 24, was taken into police custody in Indianapolis on several warrants, the Portland Police Department said. He is accused of attempted homicide in the first and second degrees, attempted homicide, illegal manufacture of a destructive device and illegal use of a weapon.

Officials at an incendiary device say a man used to shoot Portland police during demonstrations last year.

“I am grateful to investigators who have spent many hours in the past few months following these violent attacks on police and the community,” said Police Department chief Chuck Lovell in a statement. “I am also grateful to the brave officers who have put themselves in danger by serving this community. More investigations are underway. Anyone who thinks they can escape trying to murder policemen and destroy this city should think again.”

Police said Muhammed threw an incendiary device that did not explode at police officers on September 21 at the Penumbra Kelly Building, which houses some operations by the Portland Police and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

On September 23, he reportedly threw an incendiary bomb that burned a policeman’s uniform. The problem came after Kentucky prosecutors chose not to prosecute the Louisville police in connection with Breonna Taylor’s death.

In all, Muhammed’s actions were responsible for tens of thousands of dollars in damage to windows in downtown Portland, including the Historical Portland Society, during an October 11 attack, police said.

Authorities initially arrested another man, Joseph Sipe, for allegedly throwing a Molotov Cocktail on September 23. Prosecutors refused to charge him after he did not appear to be the person who threw the device at the police, the Oregonian reported.

Muhammed is being held in Indiana pending an extradition hearing.
