Portland driver goes into deadly fury, good Samaritans arrest suspect for police

A driver from Portland, Oregon, was arrested on Monday after hitting several pedestrians on several blocks, killing one and hospitalizing five others, police said.

A person described as a woman in her 70s was seriously injured and later died in a hospital, the Oregonian reported.

Five other people were taken to hospitals with non-critical injuries, Portland Fire & Rescue said. Other victims were not taken to a hospital, the Portland Police Department said during a news conference.

Witness Larry Wolfe told the newspaper he was meeting with the woman for some consultation when he saw her being run over by the car. He said he went to her and saw the vehicle come back and hit her again before making a U-turn and leaving.

The Portland Police Department said it received calls around 1:00 pm about someone being hit by a vehicle near Laurelhurst Park at around 1:00 pm, Officer Derek Carmon told reporters. As the police responded to the hit, they received more calls about the same vehicle hitting other people and vehicles.

Authorities have not confirmed how many cars were hit. Police said there were several crime scenes.

The suspect, who was not identified, collided with the vehicle and fled on foot, police said. He was detained by several community members until the police arrived.
