Popeyes following their chicken sandwich with the first fish sandwich of all time

Popeyes is giving the chicken and fish sandwich a try.

The fried chicken chain, which started a sandwich war between fast-food restaurants that continues today, announced a new Cajun Flounder Sandwich hitting stores across the country on Thursday.

The fish sandwich is a novelty for Popeyes. Made with a fillet of fried sole served on buttered brioche bread with pickles and tartar sauce – almost the same ingredients that accompanies with your fried chicken sandwich – the Cajun Flounder Sandwich is the first fish sandwich to appear on the restaurant menu.

The chain describes its new steak as “light, flakey and seasoned in a blend of Louisiana branded Cajun seasoning”. Popeyes also emphasized that the sandwich is actually made with real fish, describing it as “caught in the freezing waters of the Pacific”.

And, perhaps, to assure consumers that their fish is real, Popeyes will allow customers to add “Sandwich Insurance” to the order for just 10 cents through their app – and anyone who has a bone to choose from with the fillet fried can negotiate it for a chicken sandwich.

“After seeing the response to our chicken sandwich in 2019, we are looking forward to delivering yet another delicious sandwich to our fans that will certainly redefine industry standards,” said Popeyes President Sami Siddiqui in a statement.

Popeyes’ dubious new accompaniment has a lot to fulfill. The chain launched its fried chicken sandwich in August 2019 and started a social media rivalry with rival Chick-fil-A for having competing menu items (both sandwiches offer fried chicken and pickles).

Since then, several other chains have entered the battered battle. KFC announced last month that its chicken sandwich iteration would be launched in February. And competitors like McDonald’s, Shake Shack, Wendy’s and Burger King have also increased their chicken sandwiches to enter the hot food trend.
