The weekly case and death counts for Covid-19 in the United States have never been higher, and state officials are warning of more alarming patterns after the holiday season.

The total number of Americans infected with the virus exceeded 22 million on Saturday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, and more than 372,000 died.

Of the states: Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the state was seeing “a real and significant increase in cases and our rate of positivity at people gatherings around the holiday.”

“This sudden increase that we are in now is at least double the rate, the severity, of the previous peaks that we saw,” said the governor on Friday.

This is our most dangerous moment. “

Colorado state epidemiologist Dr. Rachel Herlihy warned on Friday of the “first signs” of an increase in Covid-19 cases. “We are beginning to see the impact of holidays appearing in our data,” she said. Health experts believe that about one in 105 residents is contagious at the moment, added Herlihy.

US Capitol Riot: Health officials are also concerned that the invasion of the US Capitol on Wednesday could have consequences for the pandemic.

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned on Friday that the riot was likely to be a “sudden event” that would have “public health consequences”.

“You unmasked individuals largely in an undistant way, who were all over Capitol,” said Dr. Robert Redfield to the McClatchy group. “So, all these individuals are going in cars and trains and planes coming home across the country right now.”

So, I think this is an event that is likely to lead to significant disclosure, ”he added.

Record of cases and deaths: In the nine days since the beginning of 2021, the United States has recorded more than 2 million new cases of Covid-19 and more than 26,000 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The country averaged 247,200 cases of Covid-19 a day last week through Friday – a historic record and more than 3.7 times the summer peak set in late July, Johns data shows. Hopkins.

And the country had an average of 2,982 deaths per day last week – the highest number in the pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins. This week was also the first time that the United States reported more than 4,000 coronavirus deaths in a single day on Thursday.
