Chicago police leaders issued a “police security alert” to officers warning that the department’s narcotics unit learned that Latin Kings factions in the Ogden patrol district on the southwest side “were instructed by members of the echelon to shoot at unidentified Chicago police vehicles. “
The alert, sent on Thursday, said gang factions planned to retaliate after the fatal police shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo at around 2 am on March 29 in an alley on Block 2,400 on South Sawyer Avenue .
The alert warned that gang members would likely shoot unidentified Chicago police vehicles, but did not say why the Kings would be retaliating.
The police department declined to comment.
The notice covered a large part of Little Village – between 23rd Street and 28th Street and between Lawndale Avenue and Whipple Street.
Officers said earlier that on the morning of the shooting, officers responded to reports of gunfire and found Adam and a man in an alley west of South Sawyer Block 2300.
A policeman chased Adam – who the police said was armed – and shot him in the chest behind Farragut Career Academy High School.
Police released a photo of a gun they said had recovered at the scene.
It was only two days later that the boy’s mother was notified of his death – and three days later, until the authorities publicly revealed that he was only 13 years old.
The city’s Civilian Police Liability Office, which investigates all of the Chicago police shootings, said on Friday that it would show the “worrying video” of the meeting to the Toledo family before releasing it to the public.
