Police hunt for woman after $ 13 million disappear from South Korean casino

South Korean police are searching the country for clues to the disappearance of millions of dollars in cash from a casino on a popular holiday island.

Jeju Shinhwa World, one of the largest resorts on Jeju Island, reported to the police earlier this month that more than 14 billion won, equivalent to $ 13 million, had disappeared from Landing Casino, where players typically play baccarat and other games high risk cards.

Hong Kong casino operator Landing International Development Ltd. asked the police to look for a Malaysian employee who was in charge of the money, but did not return to work after taking a vacation in late December. In a document sent to the Hong Kong stock exchange, chief executive Wong Hoi Po said Landing was unable to speak to the woman.

Landing International Development’s shares fell 7.6%, reaching a record low on Monday, before recovering 4.7% on Tuesday.

South Korea’s semi-official Yonhap news agency reported that police in Jeju retrieved the images from the casino’s security cameras, but found that the images taken at the time of the alleged theft had been deleted.
