Police arrested an alleged bank robber in West San Jose on Saturday morning and called the bomb squad on the scene to check for a suspicious device the thief had left behind, according to the police department.
At around 9:35 am, police responded to the Chase Bank branch on block 1700 on Saratoga Avenue, near the Westgate and El Paseo de Saratoga shopping centers, after reports of an ongoing robbery, police said.
Witnesses reported on social media that the thief was armed, but the police did not immediately confirm that it was an attempted armed robbery attempt.
A suspect was taken into custody at the scene and no injuries were reported, police said.
The SJPD bomb squad responded to the scene to investigate a suspicious device that the suspect left on the bank, police said. The bank was evacuated safely and the device was later made safe.
The bank is in one of the busiest areas of the city, with two large shopping centers and several popular restaurants at the intersection of three main aisles: Saratoga Avenue, Lawrence Expressway and Prospect Road / Campbell Avenue.
