Pokémon Fan creates Mewtwos variants for all 18 types

In the past 25 years, Mewtwo has become one of the most recognized Pokémon in the franchise. The psychic type has attracted fans since the days of Red and Green Pokémon, but it is difficult to say whether Mewtwo would have been so long-lasting if it was based on one of the other types of Pokémon. Earlier this month, artist Harry George on Instagram created different type variants for Squirtle, and now the artist has done the same for Mewtwo, too! It is really interesting to see the 18 different ways of interpreting Mewtwo, and it is clear that a lot of thought has been devoted to the process!

Harry George’s Instagram post can be found below.

Of course, George worked hard to capture the essence of Mewtwo while also channeling details that bring to mind each specific type of Pokémon. None of the types are listed in the post, but a quick look at each form should help most Pokémon fans to decipher which one is meant to be which! There are a number of small details that should help viewers to differentiate between what is Dragon type and what is Flying, or what evokes Steel, and what is Electric.

In the Pokémon series, there is really only one Mewtwo; the creature was created as a result of experiments conducted with Mew’s genetic data on Cinnabar Island. As such, it seems unlikely that Mewtwo will win any regional variants anytime soon, as it would not fit the series’ narrative very well. Of course, it’s always possible for Team Rocket or another group to try to replicate these experiments, this time with a different type of Pokémon. Given Mewtwo’s popularity, it wouldn’t be a total surprise to see the creature receive a regional variant in this way, and it could end up looking like one created by George! For now, however, fans will only have to settle for the version that has been around since 1996.

In addition to his interpretations of Mewtwo and Squirtle, George created several other pieces of Pokémon fan art. More works by the artist can be found on his Instagram page, which can be found here.
