Happy holidays, Eagles fans! It’s been a chaotic 12 months to say the least, but while many people are dreaming of a Playstation 5 or a Pelaton, I just want to find a reliable cornerback. Here are five things on my Eagles wish list this Christmas.
The QB controversy ends in peace
The Eagles are a mess now, and at the epicenter of that, are a pair of quarterbacks. No one really knows how the Eagles will cope with what is now one of the most important offseason in recent memory, and much of it will boil down to Jalen Hurts’ performance in the final two games (and potentially beyond). But all anyone can ask is that everything ends well.
Carson Wentz deserves a fresh start with a bright future. Whether with the Eagles, potentially under a new head coach or elsewhere, there is no doubt that a new sheet would be perfect for the NDSU product. But coming as a result of a million small problems, all adding up, would be a real shame.
If the Eagles really do double over Jalen Hurts and find a way to move Wentz, we can only hope that it is to a destination where he can rekindle that old fire that Philly fans once fell in love with. If they don’t, and Wentz remains an Eagle, ensuring that there is a positive structure for him to thrive, as opposed to a hellish landscape of volatility, has to be critical.
Whatever happens, we just have to wait for this unpredictable story to end as smoothly as possible.
Eagles make the right decisions out of season
There are many decisions that will need to be made by Howie Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie in this off-season. Some are related to the player, others to coaching, and some go beyond that in the talent assessment team and, potentially, in the GM itself.
There are a myriad of paths the franchise faces after such a bleak season and all it takes is a misstep and the team that is already struggling hard against a vicious wage ceiling tide will be significantly reduced.
As to who keeps the job, who negotiates and who is hired, it is a total mystery. We could see a total renovation or a commitment to repair a fortress that once glowed with the spoils of the Super Bowl. All fans can really ask for is that the decisions are the best for the franchise and not come from a state of desperation or absolute panic.
Wishing for a CB2 Eagles
Since the dark days of Jalen Mills maneuvering the CB2, and even before that with Nolan Carroll III’s race point, the Eagles have really struggled to find reliable depth outside. If there’s one thing we’ve learned this season, it’s that it can’t go on.
The split of Sidney Jones and Rasul Douglas left the Eagles with all their chips at number 29. 5’10 Avonte Maddox was tasked with becoming the running mate of Darius Slay, but the sporadic game and even more injuries sent a black cloud. about any long-term hope of him keeping the strong. Maddox, now low in the season, will have lost 13 of the 48 possible games.
The addition of Darius Slay was extremely important for this defense, but all he really did was highlight what happens when the defenders not throw it towards you, unlike when you do it. Slay can take out a No. 1 receiver and match the best in the business, but if a QB can make his reward by playing anywhere else, it makes no difference.
Whether it comes through the NFL Draft or another free agency subscription, the Eagles must finally fix the last hole in their secondary.
Don’t let the brightest talents escape
The Eagles, at $ 64 million above the salary cap, are not exactly a well-kept secret. There will be some complicated decisions that Howie Roseman will have to make, but there are also many free agents to worry about.
Greg Ward Jr, LB Alex Singleton and even P Cameron Johnston are all pending free agents that the team cannot miss.
The Eagles have many chefs in the kitchen at DT that match an absurd amount of money, they have a potential fifth year option to consider in Derek Barnett’s business and, of course, a big decision as a defender.
It will be a bumpy journey to say the least, but the Eagles absolutely must find a way to find new foundations to build their franchise after a change of guard has clearly started.
Learn from your mistakes
There have been too many mistakes made by the Eagles this season to even list here and I’m not in the mood to incite another football-related collapse just before Christmas, but an excessive attachment to elderly players who just don’t cut anymore, questionable contracts and the whatever happened to the Mighty Morphin Offensive Coordinators, the only things we can really hope to see are growth and responsibility.
Howie Roseman preached that he had changed his habits in the last off-season, but it quickly became clear that the more things change, the more they stay the same. We can only hope that, after a difficult season, things will finally change for the better.
