Pizza Hut is launching a new Detroit-style pizza at locations across the United States in what it says is the biggest launch of the year.
Typical of Detroit style, the pizzas are rectangular with a thick crust, cheese and tomato sauce. Pizza Hut says it has tested eight different versions of the sauce, which is only available in new pies. The new menu item comes in four versions: Detroit Double Pepperoni, Double Cheesy, Meaty Deluxe and Supreme, which comes with Italian sausage and vegetables.

The pizzeria chain spent a year developing the dish after customer orders, she said in a press release, testing more than 500 variations before reaching the final version. Several were tested in the Midwest before launch across the country.
“Countless hours have been spent testing and perfecting every detail here to create our Detroit-style version of pizza,” said David Graves, Pizza Hut’s brand director. Prices start at $ 10.99.

Pizza Hut launched several other new items last year to drive traffic during the pandemic. She re-launched her Large Original Stuffed Crust pizza in the United States to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her stuffed dough. It also distributed free stuffed pasta rings to customers in selected stores.
The chain also joined other trends last year. In November, it announced a partnership with Beyond Meat to create a vegetable-based sausage pizza. And in December it launched the “Triple Treat Box” with Cinnabon breadsticks, pizza and mini rolls.

The pandemic hit the restaurant industry hard, but pizza sales skyrocketed. Yum Brands, owner of Pizza Hut along with Taco Bell and KFC, exceeded expectations with earnings in the third quarter in 2020, with $ 283 million in profits, compared with $ 255 million in the third quarter of 2019.
