Pixel artist and illustrator Pat Ackerman spent the past year reimagining the entire Pokédex of Pokémon Sword and Shield like old school sprites.

Starting when the eighth generation starters were revealed, Ackerman slowly but surely pixelated every pocket monster found in the latest games in the series. And as of this week, he has an incredibly impressive portfolio of perfectly pixelated Pokémon to show him.

Perhaps even more impressive is Ackerman’s dedication to making his art seem as close to the first generation of Pokémon games as possible –Yellow Pokémon specifically.

“When creating these, I use the 56 x 56 screen, which was the original size of the sprites in Pokémon Red / Blue / Green / Yellow, ”Ackerman said Kotaku. “I also maintain the palette of Yellow. I really focus on the Pokémon’s pose, because that’s what used to define who they were before 3D models. I try to make them dynamic and show something unique about the Pokémon. “

Other pixel designs by Ackerman cover the previous ones Pokémon generations and Monster hunter, beautifully capturing the restrictions of Game Boy hardware. His work can also be found in RPG games for PC Monster crown.

We’ve included some of Ackerman’s favorites Pokémon Sword and Shield sprites at the top of this story, but make sure to check out more of his work at Twitter and Instagram.
