Well, we can’t make box office numbers. So, we’re doing it now.

As reported by Deadline, Soul, the most recently Pixar animation film, absolutely shook Nielsen’s weekly streaming charts in the last week of December. The film, about a music teacher and jazz artist separated from his body, it was launched on Disney Plus as a replacement for a wide theatrical release, a choice made due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. During the first week, it was broadcast by a total of 1.6669 billion minutes. This translates to about 500 million views of the film, although supposing that everyone who broadcast part of it broadcasted everything, which is probably not the case.

That total of around 1.7 billion beat the most broadcast title on the Nielsen charts, which is almost always The office. During that week, the end of the show’s long stay on Netflix, it reached 1.435 billion. Soon, it will be transferred to Peacock, as the ads for the streaming service will be happy.

Nielsen’s streaming graphics are a new way to keep up with media consumption habits, and it’s interesting to see that big event launches are making an impact. As for the other big Christmas release, Wonder Woman 1984, Nielsen has not yet added HBO Max to its graphics system. So, uh, we don’t know.
