GREENVILLE, NC

– East Carolina begins its outdoor season this weekend with all the athletes competing at Weems Baskin, on the University of South Carolina campus. The meeting is scheduled for March 26-27 at the Sheila and Morris Creggar track.

There will be no general fan admission to Weems Baskin on Friday or Saturday. The match starts on Friday at 10am with the field races and the track races start at 4pm. On Saturday the action starts at 10am on the field and 11am on the track.

The Pirates will face a large field of teams in Columbia, including Appalachian State, Benedict, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Claflin, Coastal Carolina, Coppin State, Emmanuel College, Furman, Georgia State, Kennesaw State, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Limestone College, North Carolina A&T, North Greenville University, Presbyterian College, Savannah State, South Carolina State, Southern Wesleyan, The Citadel, Kentucky, Charlotte, Northern Colorado, Virginia Tech and Voorhees College.

“We haven’t been able to compete for a long time”, Athletics and Cross Country Director Male and Female Curt Kraft said. “The student-athletes are extremely excited to get there. To be honest with you, we really don’t know what to expect because we’ve been standing around for a long time. I can tell you this – the whole team has been working extremely hard to get to this point.”

ECU returns four NCAA East Preliminary 2019 qualifiers in Alyssa Sandy (100m with barriers), Sommer Knight (pole vault), Brooke Stith (triple jump) and Mackenzie Whitaker (long jump). The Pirates are also looking to improve their position at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, where women finished eighth and men finished ninth.

“We are approaching this weekend with good attitudes and, hopefully, that shows in the results,” added Kraft. “I am a coach who cares about the effort. As long as I see the effort there, the results will take care of themselves.”
