The confusion over Oprah Winfrey’s interview to make headlines with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, also known as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, did not end when the credits started Sunday night special CBS. Queen Elizabeth II issued a statement about the interview, and Jen Psaki, President Joe Biden’s press secretary, until approached this in a general way. Now British television personality Piers Morgan has left the Good Morning Britain program after saying he did not believe what Markle said about considering suicide and not receiving help from the palace.

Who is Piers Morgan?

Americans should remember Morgan from his 2006-2011 stint as a judge on America’s Got Talent, or from his appearance on CNN Piers Morgan Live, which ended in 2014. He also won the first season of The Celebrity Apprentice, in 2008, when it was crowned Best Brain for Business by the then businessman, later President of the United States, Donald Trump. But he is mainly a name in the UK, where he served as editor of several tabloids and co-hosted Good Morning Britain 2015 until its departure in 2021.

What did he say?

Morgan has been a vocal critic of Meghan Markle, and he did not restrain himself on Good Morning Britain in the days after the interview aired. He called the Markle and Prince Harry Winfrey interview a “two-hour-a-day rubbish” from the royal family.

But his comments on Monday about Markle’s discussion of his suicidal feelings generated more controversy. After the program repeated that part of the interview, Morgan said, “I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word of what she says, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report.”

Morgan made his controversial comments on the show on Tuesday, stepping back a little.

“I still have serious concerns about the truth of much of what she said,” announced Morgan. But he said he may have gone too far, saying, “It is not for me to question whether she felt suicidal.”

He went on to say that he did not believe that a member of the royal household would tell Markle that she could not seek help for feelings of despair. If that is true, that royal employee should be fired, and the royal family should respond for allowing that, said Morgan.

What happened next?

Morgan’s comments on Markle were not well received. Ofcom, the British government’s broadcasting regulatory authority, is investigating the matter.

“We launched an investigation into Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain under our damage and offense rules,” said an Ofcom representative in a tweet sent on Tuesday, noting that the organization had received more than 41,000 complaints about the Monday program at that time.

But Morgan still appeared on Tuesday’s show, where things got heated. Another host of the program, Alex Beresford, called him by Markle’s comments, saying in part that Morgan was angry because of his previous friendship with the Duchess.

“She has the right to interrupt you if she wants to,” said Beresford. “Has she said anything about you since she cut it? I don’t think she said it, but you still continue to destroy it.”

That’s when Morgan got up and left the set, shouting, “OK, I’m done with this.”

Time to leave

Morgan has now left Good Morning Britain. ITV, the broadcaster that broadcasts the morning show, announced the change on Tuesday.

“After discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan decided that now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain,” says the statement. “ITV accepted this decision and has nothing more to add.”

What was the reaction?

Many viewers, both British and American, sided with Markle and Prince Harry.

English comedian Sue Perkins, known to many for her six years as host of The Great British Bake-Off, supported Markle.

“I want to live in a world where, wherever you are and whatever your circumstances, you are believed and helped when you are in a crisis,” Perkins said in a tweet.

Another Twitter user wrote: “The irony here is that @piersmorgan believes it’s okay to walk away from something he can’t handle. But he can let go if Meghan and Harry walk away after having an unsustainable experience. everything about the kind of person he is. “

Others supported Morgan, questioning Markle and her reasons for the interview.

“They made millions on it!” one person wrote. “They are fine with making the claims and hoping people will believe them, but the claims made about them are lies! Meghan has no family and now neither does Harry!”

Winfrey said during the interview that Markle and the prince were not paid to speak to her.

As for Morgan, he tweeted a GIF of a running clock and the words, “TICK TOCK”, with no explanation.
