Legendary French fashion designer and licensing expert Pierre Cardin died at 98.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the name Cardin was printed on thousands of products, including watches and bed sheets, and sold in more than 100,000 stores worldwide.
Cardin became known for popularizing the style of the Space Age, which became common in the 1960s.
The French Academy of Fine Arts announced Cardin’s death in a tweet on Tuesday. It did not specify when the designer died or the cause of death.
“Fashion is always ridiculous, seen before or after. But at the moment, it’s wonderful, ”said Cardin in a 1970 interview for French television.
With André Courrèges and Paco Rabanne, Cardin specialized in “sharp shapes” and graphic patterns from the 1950s. He was known for spandex dresses with plastic hoops, bubble dresses and hats that covered the entire head of a model .
However, the brand’s appearance has remained virtually unchanged over the years, causing a reduction in sales.
Born in Italy in 1922, Cardin moved to France during his childhood and became an apprentice tailor at the age of 14.
He worked as an assistant at Casa de Paquin, and also worked with Jean Cocteau, Elsa Schiaparelli and Christian Dior.
