Phoebe Bridgers was the musical guest in Saturday Night Live this weekend. At the end of one of her “I Know The End” performances, she broke the guitar. And it was beautiful and cathartic.
Bridgers’ salute to ~ rock ‘n’ roll ~ instantly became a meme. Firstly, because her guitar fought well not to try to be crushed.
And then, and mostly, people were rooting for her. And feeling like they he needed to see her break that guitar for her own healing.
The performance caused some friction online after one person openly questioned why Bridgers would break his guitar on stage. “I mean, I didn’t really care about the music either, but it seemed extra,” user BrooklynDad_Defiant! added.
People on Twitter responded quickly and came to Bridgers’ defense. Many people have pointed out that guitar breaking has been revered as a rock ‘n’ roll tradition for decades – when musicians do, at least.
One person simply replied, “because it is so fucking cool !!!!!”
And the verdict remains: it’s fucking cool. Thank you, Bridgers, for breaking that guitar.
